  • University of Rochester- scholarship $10,000/year $40,000/4 years
Picture
Fiona was an inquisitive and engaged student who worked and finished her portfolio at West California Academy of Art and Design in two years.
Picture
Her time here was spent working on fundamentals skills and creating project-based assignments. Her overall portfolio showcased a balance of Fine Art and Design.
Picture
Selected work included her painting on the idea of “what is beauty” and the negative influence on gender. There is a critical questioning of the roles we play in a systematic culture to appease through appearance. Whether we are complacent or spectators.
Picture
Another noted work is a multi-design project designing a space suit as we are on the verge of colonizing Mars. This suit included a language translator, magnetic attachments built in microphones and sensory detection. The suit concept regulates the body and is able to with stand high temperatures.  A 3D hologram can be projected from a utility the belt. Piezoelectrical boots charges the suit while walking or sitting to power the suit constantly.
Picture
We are excited to see what the future will bring to Fiona as she continues her studies with a strong perspective with art and design.

Eric Lin’s Enlarged Scaled Heads Series: WCAAD Student Produces Exceptional Art for His Age

1/13/2021

Eric Lin, 16 years old, is a current WCAAD student that has experimented with traditional and digital mediums.
Picture
His work echoes both a reminiscence to traditional “Old Master” approaches and Urbanism- specifically, murals and epitaphs.
Picture
The student artist’s observations of evolving city dynamics, cultural diaspora and messages from urban sensory (graffiti, music, fashion trends, our past), and our humanistic need to be immortalize through imagery is investigated.
Picture
Eric focuses on past and present iconic imagery and through expression and “enlarged scaled heads” he executes a series of colorful works.
Picture
Picture
These head studies formulate personnel and intimate contemplation of humanity and time and its relational relevance or “irrelevance” as time goes by.
Picture
Statuesque and recognizable icons become distortive, almost decapitate and recontextualizes through brush strokes and a stark contrast between contemporary bright color vs. dull photographic appearances.
Picture
The subject of the heads places the viewer as the interrogator of this beautiful yet grotesque scene and questions the idea of fame and immortality through manipulation of imagery and metaphors.
Picture
Picture
The current state of distant learning and the class profile of virtual portraits is also an influence of how Eric sees and is questioning the idea of space and reality.

The artwork themed “Striving” was created by Eric at the peak of the pandemic reflecting the tragedy and psychological downfall of COVID-19.
Picture
The loneliness that unfortunately is one of many consequences of this deadly decease to plague youth and many others. As we look to the top of the stairs to our “freedom”, the faint neon red glow illuminates the opening door. Blocking our path are white shoes painted almost entirely red by this ominous light. This apocalyptic seen plays out as a metaphor for the emptiness, and a halt on dreams. The shoes act as vessels representing isolation and death to daily normality. These expensive and idolized shoes become a material luxury and that have now been more evident the inequalities and what people put up as pillars for what they place faith in. Many people with economic situations in jeopardy and the unforeseen future gives this artwork a reflective time for the viewer as the artist intent is as well.

This artwork has been selected for the 2021 PHE International Art Exhibition themed “Health/Fighting Against COVID-19”.

Eric is currently exploring art and design majors. Stay tuned to see more exciting work.

WCAAD Student Jimmy Liu Accepted to Art Center with A Scholarship of $42,000

12/5/2020

We Congratulate Jimmy Liu on his acceptance to the Product Design field at Art Center College of Design with a scholarship of $10,500 per year $42,000 four years!
Picture
Additional colleges include: Product Design
(Otis College of Art and Design - scholarship $9,000 per year $36,000 four years)
Jimmy Liu’s overall work comes from a sincere desire to improve humanity.
Picture
Picture

Early on Jimmy demonstrated promise at a young age where he watched his father paint. Paper being scarce, Jimmy took to the wall and began doodling and leading to analyses of deconstructing Spider-man’s web shooters. Eventually motivating him to pursue a serious practice in Product Design.
Picture
Picture

During his time here he was very interested in materiality and how it could be a factor on global preservation and how new inventions like aerogel, which is a material that is mostly filled with air resists heat and many other properties efficiently.

In his projects, researching Graphene, he realized this would completely change the way electronics work and easy for mass production and for conductive properties with allowance for easy transportation and maintenance. Polymers for recyclable and reusable and efficient materials have sparked his continuing pursuit of environmental activism to advance civilization. This has inspired traits and personal practice in Art and Design, evolving into the catalyst for Jimmy’s passion in product design “futurism”.

Picture
Picture

Closely following careers of
Dieter rams, James Dyson, Richard Sapper other influence from his high school contributed to his drive.
Picture

One of his influential experiences was joining JROTC for a summer in camp Pendleton despite his asthma. Despite disadvantages and the never give up attitude carried on into his life and studies. I have seen Jimmy very enthusiastic and despite being the weakest student in life drawing at first. His resilience paid off.
Picture
Picture

He worked very hard to catch up technically to other students and eventually became quite a skill full painter.

Picture
Picture
Picture

In his future school he hopes to take on classes like:3D design and much more classes on Anatomy and Ergonomics: Human Factors Connections through Color and Design, Woodworking, Metal, Digital and other related Design courses with entrepreneurial aspects.
Picture

“My interest grew even more when I got an opportunity to take classes with Roman S. Iniguez and Omar Gallegos in the West California Academy of Art and Design because I believe I improved my art after I got to study under them.  My product designs try to reflect ingenuity as much as I could and want to make and improve better functioning products that may improve the world. I believe my art reflects the ability to improve the quality of life for people and could be used to show environmental responsibility.” Jimmy said.
Picture

Jimmy also participated in projects in dt008 at PCC; and learned ACAD and physics in Temple City High School. He integrated ideas of mechanisms and physics into my work to try and get better designs.

WCAAD Student Chloe Wen Earned Acceptance to Otis with Scholarship of $72,000/4yrs

Congratulations to Chloe Wen on her acceptance in the Entertainment Design (Otis College of Art and Design) and a scholarship $18,000 per year $60,000 4 years.

Picture
Additional colleges accepted:

  • Entertainment/Illustration (Art Center College of Design)
  • Entertainment Design (Laguna College of Art and Design) - scholarship $10,000 per year $40,000 4 years
Picture

Entertainment Design is designing concept for characters, vehicles, props, and environments, for fictional worlds, and digitally render for: (films, video games, animation, and theme parks, etc.). Students learn to make their designs creative, innovative, visually appealing as well as functional.
Picture
Picture
Chloe has been part of the Academy for about two years where she pursued illustration ad Entertainment Design.
Picture
Picture
Her skills and talent have placed her into the top tier group of students. Her work demonstrates an evolution of understanding of form and mastery.
Picture
Picture
Chole’s life drawing aesthetic and color is one of her best qualities. Life Drawing for Chole was a crucial class to maintain and heighten her skill set.

Many US colleges consider life drawings from a model /observational, among the first and most important components in students’ portfolios. The reason why, is that, essentially, they see how well you understand: forms, proportions, perspective, shading, weight, balance, tension, perceptive, and all the fundamentals. WCAAD offers students, instructed life drawing classes including, anatomy, working with various material, and techniques on a weekly basis. Students will learn from a live model and include learning from mix media.
Picture
This year, Chloe focused on refining her digital skills matching her formal training with a sense of exploration. Painting, sculptures and her continuing sense of creativity gained in the WCAAD program will benefit her in the long run for a well-rounded aptitude. Her design sensibility was always well researched and her desire to put in as much effort to make a mark in her work really drove her passion for success. One of the best characteristics to see at WCAAD is great attitudes and Chole Wen is no acceptations.
Picture
Picture
Graduating from WCAAD motivated her to continue working on her own. Her social media is filled with current work and we are happy she can keep her enthusiasm going.
Picture
WCAAD offers college-bound students a unique combination of practical expertise and mentorship to help them develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to choose the right school for them – and get in! Students will work one-to-one with faculty to develop an intense individual focused and disciplined-specific portfolio.

Congratulations to Kelly Chen on her acceptance to Art Center College of Design in Entertainment Design/Illustration with a Scholarship of $15,000 per year $60,000 4 years

Additional School accepted were:
  • UCI
  • UCSB
  • UCSD

Entertainment Design is designing concept for characters, vehicles, props, and environments, for fictional worlds, and digitally render for: (films, video games, animation, and theme parks, etc.). Students learn to make their designs creative, innovative, visually appealing as well as functional.

Kelly’s journey began 2 years ago when she enrolled in the portfolio program seeking skills knowledge and any educational information leading her to a path of success in the Entertainment Arts.

Picture

Kelly has always been naturally talented. She was one of the most excited students, eager to learn all she could absorbing every aspect of her experience here.

I can recall a student who was intimidated by the challenging profession and the competitive nature of her dream school choice (Art Center), to someone who at the end, inspired her peers and instructors by the amount of work produced and her style.

What I remember most about Kelly is that she always asked as many questions as possible about her career and welcomed critique. Conversations with her were fruitful and caught the attentions of other students to motivate them and participate in the critical dialogue during class sessions.

Parents were not sure of this major and the expense to commit to the high risk, but Kelly pursued and never gave up on her dream.

Kelly maintained high grades and was accepted to many UC’s as well. We are very excited to see what Kelly’s future will bring with a well-deserved scholarship!

WCAAD offers college-bound students a unique combination of practical expertise and mentorship to help them develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to choose the right school for them – and get in!
