Congratulations to WCAAD student Meredith Luo, 9 years old, for winning the 1st Place award of the LA County level contest 3th-5th Group at the 44th Los Angeles Bookmark Contest! She also won the 1st Place award of the Temple City Library 3th-5th Group. 20 out of 17,000 contestants were selected for the county level awards this year. The 1st district supervisor Hilda L. Solis, the 2nd district supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, the 3rd district chair Lindsey P. Horvath, the 4th district supervisor Janice Hahn and the 5th district supervisor Katheryn Barger presented the awards to the winners. Since 1980 the County Library has conducted the contest to encourage children’s artistic expression, nurturing their love of reading and allow them to share their joy of books and the written word. The contest is open to students from kindergarten to 12th grade whose entries are judged in separate categories according to grade level. Participants will compete in the four categories: Kindergarten – Grade 2, Grades 3 – 5, Grades 6 – 8 and Grades 9 – 12. Each library will select a local winner in each grade level category in November. Grand prize winners for each LA County supervisorial district will be selected by the Board of Supervisors in the spring; these 20 winning designs will be made into bookmarks, available across all the libraries in 2024. West California Academy of Art and Design encourages the students to join the bookmark contest every year, and the students win top awards at both the district level and county level competitions.
