Congratulations to Alice Zhou on her acceptance to USC for the 2024 Fall! Additional colleges admitted: Otis College of Art and Design with a scholarship of $ 108,000; Pratt Institute with a scholarship of $ 108,000; Art Center College of Design with a scholarship of $ 92,000; SCAD-Savannah College of Art and Design with a scholarship of $ 28,000; University of California Davis. Her major is Game Art/Illustration. Alice has been a student in WCAAD since she was 11. She was upgraded early to the portfolio prep class reserved for 14 yrs. and older. Due to her natural abilities, I have personally worked with Alice throughout the years and have witnessed firsthand, a maturity, growth, and sophistication in application of skills. Alice has always wanted to be part of a community and often surrounded herself with talented individuals learning from others. She has a strong presence on social media and shares her art often. She has been an inspiration to her peers and the art community in general. She is always working on something new and is inspired easily keeping her motivated as she sees the bigger picture. This motivation is evident as she would drive to the Academy from Santa Monica, an hour away, every weekend. In her time here, Alice has been able to develop traditional and digital skills and often sets an example for others to follow. Alice has been able to produce solid works and prefers Procreate but has abilities in Blender, Photoshop and plays with mixed media. Her gestural work in life drawing is very much noted and admired. I have seen her be more and more courageous taking risk with her work as she also explored an array of media, leading to sculpture. She has been able to learn from various ventures and opportunities gaining insights from her experiences. From these varied experiences, I have seen her be more critical, gain better design language and explore various media such as traditional and non-traditional approaches and transferring into digital skills. Her interest in film and the classics inform her work, as she can create strong visuals with her eclectic visual resources. Due to the supportive community around her, who share their love for all types of creative media, she has been able to thrive. According to Alice’s family art takes a high priority in their lives. She walks a thin line between Chinese culture and western influence, often handling communication between family and the outside world as a translator, whether her family is renting houses, car dealerships or parent conferences, Alice is at the helm of it all. She also has a strong relationship with her much younger little brother, attended most of his school activities when her parents cannot make it. Alice volunteered with the Kiwanis, since middle school. She has a deep passion for music and plays the piano since 6- audio and performative. She also plays guitar and drums. From joining ensemble dubs and music groups, in the future she would like to start a band. Lastly this Summer, I chose Alice out of two students to feature her work in the Chinese American museum due to her work ethic, character, and desire to be an active participant in the art world. She displayed work and was a docent for the museum creating a professional environment. Alice takes advantage of all her resources while at the same time networking with a humble approach and enthusiasm. She is very appreciative of people around her and is eager to start a new journey that will advance her to her goals and future career. I believe she will do any school justice as she is a great ambassador and representative.
