WCAAD Students Won 49th Assembly District Award and 27th Congressional Award

49th Assembly District Award winners of the 2019 Fitness Day & Health Fair Drawing Contest were announced recently. 9 students from West California Academy of Art and Design won the awards, including Phoebe You, 11 years old, theme: Water-in-Motion; Irene Xue, 11 years old, theme: Protect Environment; Amelia Hu, 9 years old, theme:  Protect Environment; Venita Ye, 8 years old, theme: Healthy Living; Emily Shaw, 8 years old, theme:  Water-in-Motion; Ying Dong Gao, 7 years old, theme: Protect Environment; Eric Gan, 5 years old, theme: Water-in-Motion; Kevin Jiang, 5 years old, theme: Healthy Living; Harry Zhang, 4 years old, theme: Healthy Living .

April 22, 2020 is the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day, the date in 1970 when environmental rallies were first held across America from Philadelphia to Chicago to Los Angeles. This holiday is now celebrated in over 193 countries giving the world a date to come together to care for the environment and share innovative approaches to protect and conserve our planet.

​On the Erath Day people say thanks to the Earth and learn ways to keep the Earth safe and clean. But saving the Earth is not just for grow-ups. Kids are also taking an active part in it.

“It’s our responsibility to cultivate children’s environment-protection concept through art teaching & learning process.” Wang Lei, the Principal of West California Academy of Art and Design, said, “and it’s important to teach them at a very young age.”

West California Academy of Art and Design Students Doodle for Google(II)

West California Academy of Art and Design students show brilliant creativity in the 2019 Doodle4Google art contest themed “When I Grow Up…". ​
  1. It will rain food and people don’t have to buy groceries any more. Sophia (Bohan) Chen, 6
  2. I will create an octopus robot to eat trash and turn trash into many interesting things such as a turtle robot planting seeds and an elephant robot watering plants. Wynnston Ma,  7 
  3. People will be able to sit around controlling robot arms to save the world from pollution. Jonathan Zhang, 9 
  4. Robot firefighters will save people from burning buildings. Kyle Lai, 8


     
Doodle4Google is an annual contest open to students in grades K-12. Students are invited to create their own Google doodle for the chance to have it featured on the Google homepage. 

  1. We will have a library with books where you can experience what happens inside the books. Jenna Vuong, 9
  2. The world will be characterized by gaming because gaming has a big impact on people’ s life. Mars Wang, 11
  3. A time machine will take people travel to the past to learn things by seeing them in person. Kyle Zhan, 10
With a purpose of encouraging creativity in United States school students through a logo contest, Google holds such art event to provide opportunities for the young generation to convey their creative ideas and thinking which is crucial for our future development.

  1. Everyone will have thoughtful minds of saving the earth and won’t throw trash any more in freeways, sidewalks, and beaches. Natalie Park, 10
  2. The world will have all kinds of animals around and I can live and play with them. Hannah Jin, 7
  3. No more trash in the ocean and sea creatures won’t be harmed and die. Kristy Peng, 12

According to the contest requirement, each doodle must incorporate the letters G-o-o-g-l-e.  Young artists can utilize any materials to bring their creation to life.

  1. People on Earth will move to another planet. Nina (Jiarong), 12
  2. I will make a Google Space Colony: the two Os are defense parts, G is laboratory, L is where supplies are stored and E is where people cook food. Raymond Li, 7
  3. When the alien invasion takes place in the year 3010, the earth is destroyed, the space is polluted and we live on Mars. Ian (Ying Yi) Gao, 7

Postpone School Re-opening

Dear Parents,

Due to state and government mandates, we will reschedule school re-opening until further notice. Some students have already taken advantage of the fantastic online classes with successful outcomes. We encourage students to participate in this enrichment program that is as nurturing as our in-person classes.  Our Academy wishes to continue the great relationships with families and staff to remind you that academic achievement is our priority. Thank you!
