Matthew Leung, a student of West California Academy of Art and Design portfolio preparation class, received offers from four prestigious colleges: Pratt Institute, Woodbury University, Southern California Institute of Architecture (Sci–Arc) and University of Oregon. Two universities provide scholarships for him:University of Oregon $4,000/year,total $16,000;Woodbury University $16,000/semester,total $80,000. Matthew chose Woodbury University-Architecture. Founded in 1884,Woodbury has 26 practice-based, fully-accredited professional and liberal arts undergraduate and graduate majors. Woodbury is a non-profit institution dedicated to the student experience. Architecture is one of 14 schools nationwide accepted by the National Council of Architects Registration Boards (only three in Southern California) to offer the Integrated Path to Licensure (IPAL) initiative; and is the only institution where IPAL is available to both undergraduate and graduate students. Matthew has produced an impressive amount of work that exhibits creativity, is genuine and engaging. Matthew finished his portfolio under the major of architecture under a year. Since attending West California Academy of Art and Design, Matthew became increasingly more independent each completed tasks that was assigned to him. He was never satisfied, improving his work ethic, or on his design, and performance, to improve on his overall portfolio. When he came across complex issues related to his assignments, he always found ways to work through, despite disadvantages. He never waited idly by for someone to give him answers. He took on a very proactive approach to completing his work and usually surpasses what is asked of him. “Often we view artists and designers as those who beautify the world, and while it is true that the academy provides education for this purpose, I believe that willing students are called to make positive change.” Matthew said, “as a student who has studied at the academy, I can confidently say that art education has heightened my social conscience and that in college and beyond I could use my passion for design to act upon what the world needs.” He is excellent with communication and is very inquisitive about his passion, architecture. He consistently asks for second opinions on his work and displays a tremendous amount of care for the execution of it. His open-mindedness, inquisitively, and receptiveness to instruction have been some of the main contributing factors of his rapid growth. Matthew started out knowing nothing about architecture, and the Academy has been witness to how he was able to immerse completely in the field as well as, balance out grades, attend a USC intensive Summer program on exploration of architecture, extracurricular activities, and a portfolio at our academy. It speaks to his character and determination, as too, how he was able to develop strong foundation in only a year.
