Most entertainment design is for film, video games, animation, and theme park. Concept Design is about visualizing the world before actually building out props, costumes, and sets in order to streamline the process. Designs must be creative, innovative, and visually appealing as well as be able to work and function. This course will allow the student to fully flesh out a fictional world of their own development. They will design a character, vehicle, prop, and environment and digitally render them. Students will learn----- Concept Sketch: Using pen, pencil, marker, brush pen, etc. to quickly communicate conceptual ideas. Explore organic, hard surface. Intro to Visual communication and develop sketch ideations and variations. Form Language (Design theory) : Explore Design, Styles, and Methods. Extracting language from Forms. Using vocabulary to generate original ideas. (CHARACTER, VEHICLE, ENVIRONMET) Vehicle & Mechanic Design: Explore Form and Function. Anatomy of Vehicles and Mechanics. Gears and Joints. Design purpose and function. Rendering and intro to Hard-surface Design. Experimental Digital Painting: Learn Photoshop, Design fundamentals, Character, Shape and from language. Explore poses, character variation, Design Character/Creature for Entertainment Design. Plein Air: Experience from life, color, light, composition, emotion. On location, interpret. Buildings: Perspective, Entertainment Design Sketching, Set Dressing interior/exterior space, layout design. Intro to form and function. Color Theory: Design with color and light. Silhouette, poses, variation memorable and unique character. Figure Painting: Learn Anatomy, color, portraiture, poses costuming, style, light, contextualizing character, quick sketch, creating mood, gestural aspects, composition. Courses are taught by WCAAD faculty, who consider the college’s admissions and requirements when structuring assignments. Providing students with competent skills level for college. Jack Sy, the Department Chairman of the Digital Arts Department at the West California Academy of Art and Design, holds a Bachelor’s degree of Fine Arts from the Art Center College of Design in Illustration with a minor in Entertainment Design. He has 10+ years of teaching experience with students of all ages. His classes cover a wide range of subjects and majors related to digital arts such as Entertainment Design, Animation, Graphic Design, Product Design and Digital Illustration. He has various experience in multiple design fields and has worked on projects with companies such as Lucas Arts, Microsoft, Spinmaster, Mattel, and Netflix. His notable industry experience include designing videogame consoles for Hyperkin, concept design for Star Wars Kinect, concept design for various TV commercials, digital illustration for Monster High, digital illustration for Max Steel, and concept design for various mobile games. In addition to teaching, he also is an independent videogame developer utilizing his skills in entertainment design, animation, graphic design and game design.
