Students of West California Academy of Art and Design (WCAAD) joined the San Gabriel Police Department in celebrating National Night Out on August 1 and helped raise $5,130 for K-9 Bentley and K-9 Edy by holding an on-site charity sale of the students’Police/K-9s themed artworks.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods
safer, more caring places to live. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August.
The entire community was invited to gather for an evening of food, music, and fun, including public safety displays and various activities for children. Members of the Military, Police & Fire Department and community leaders including Congresswoman Judy Chu, California State Assemblyman Mike Fong, San Gabriel Councilmember Tony Ding and Denise Menchaca, Chinese American Political Action Committee Vice Chairman Linda Shen, Chinese American Education Association President Robert Liu attended the NNO event.
"Our students are using their artistic talents to contribute to the community," said WCAAD Principal Lei Wang, “122 students enthusiastically took part in the art creation and charity sale.”
National Night Out was introduced in August of 1984 through an already established network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations and volunteers across the nation. The first annual National Night Out involved 25 million neighbors across 400 communities in 23 states.
Eight pieces of artworks were sold. The group artwork produced by 23 students was bid by for $2000 by the Chinese Women's Business Association of California (CWBAC).

“Our students produced exceptional artworks paying tribute to the police and K-9s, each of which is a unique art masterpiece.” Lei Wang said, “Buying the artworks is not only an expression of respect and love for the loyal K-9s, but also a recognition and encouragement for the children's artistic talent and kind hearts.”
The police officers of the San Gabriel Police Department were impressed by the children's outstanding creativity and artistic talent. The children finally had the opportunity to take photos with the “real”K-9 Bentley and K-9 Edy, as well as the police officers they have always admired. They also had the opportunity to ride a cool police motorcycle!
In addition to producing artworks to raise funds for K-9 Bentley and K-9 Edy, WCAAD students and their parents also raised funds of $2480 by buying the dolls of K-9 Bentley and K-9 Edy
The art charity sale will continue online, with over a hundred student artworks available for public selection. Hope all respond positively and participate enthusiastically! Thank you!
