Throughout the years, he has gained a rich appreciation for the arts as he surpassed through enriched studies, passing instructors and levels that guiding him to the right path and direction in eventually, choosing a career. Recalling Jason Liu in middle school, I found him alway enthusiastic, motivated, and ready to pursue his passion-art! I started teaching Jason in summer school, where I first met him. Even then, I could see that he was inspired and enjoyed the art making process. Upon entering the portfolio preparation program, I could see his love for the design field. Taking advantage of the time here, he was able to experience many art and design tracks, ultimately choosing graphic design. Jason delved into politics, surrealism, and fantasy, and created creative illustrations. Yet his heart was always in the graphic design. Jason made himself always available to volunteer or compete in art contests. He joined several competitions and placed in the top three consecutively. Among some of the well-known contests are, PHE International, Nobel Peace Prize, Canada World Cup, Art and Technology etc. Jason produced work 5 times what other students output in a very short time. Jason was placed in an advanced digital class around middle school due to his natural talent and abilities. He has taken advanced portfolio preparation courses including life drawing and digital courses, creative painting and figure drawing. He loves to push himself and test his abilities outside class. Jason always found ways to finding better ways to self-improve and took on challenges with ease. I could always rely on him and ask him to help with students by creating a healthy dialogue who shared the same passion as he. In his pursuit of graphic design, he experimented and used his time to really consider his future as he was had a curiosity and sought out knowledge. He had a hunger for understanding how his major has and will change. This is a student who has really evolved with solid opinions and advice ready for the rigor of college studies. He has also applied his skills in his school and outside. At school he used his graphic design skills to help with editorials in his high school newspaper. He has been an editor in his high school for his newspaper on campus and created professional brochures for companies. Jason’s parents expressed their gratitude from the bottom of their hearts to the Academy and the instructors for such valuable gift of art education. Jason is always open to learn without ego with boundless potential. (By Omar Gallegos, Vice Principal and Director of Education of West California Academy of Art and Design)
