The Rosemead Mayor Award winners of the 2019 Fitness Day & Health Fair Drawing Contest were announced on January 14, 2020 at the Rosemead City Hall. Six students from West California Academy of Art and Design won the awards:

The Rosemead Mayor Margaret Clark presented the awards to the winners.
Boyi Yu, 7-year-old student from West California Academy of Art and Design (WCAAD), won the Grand Prize at 2019 International PHE Art Contest. The theme of the contest is: Peace, Health, Environmental Protection, and Boyi’s winning artwork is titled “Firefighters, Our Hero.”
Three students from WCAAD won the 1st Place: Charcie Chan, Chloe Shyu, Emily Ziyao Zhuo.
The 2nd Place winners are：Scott Wang, Madison Ho, Hayley Wu, Angie Li, Brian Wang, Wynnston Ma.
The 3rd Place winners are：Kristy Peng, Cody Wang, Victoria Wang, Caleb Lee, Kingston Zheng, Jade Jagger Zheng, Jade Jasper, Alyssa Phuong, Irene Xue, Sariah Chan, Aden Li, Sophie Lin, Abbriana Guan, Cody Li, Irina Kim。
The Excellence Award winners are：Tracy Chuqiao Cui, Avril Deng, Eason Xue, Helen Xu, Lydia Gao, Lawrence Zhao。
Besides, WCAAD won the Group 2nd Place Award.
The purpose of this art competition is to encourage young students in creating arts and developing their individual creativity, leading to better living qualities and beautiful lives for all.
The winning artworks were selected by professional judges consisting of well-known artists, and the criteria of judging include creativity, color, composition, the techniques of the drawing, and how related the content is to the theme of the contest.
In addition to Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday’s schedules for portfolio preparation classes, West California Academy of Art and Design will offer portfolio preparation classes on Sunday starting January 2020.
Sunday Portfolio Preparation Class Schedule: 9:00am-12:00pm，1:00pm-3:00pm， 3:00pm-6:00pm.
Steve Ohlrich, the instructor for Sunday’s portfolio preparation classes, is an artist who comes from an artistic heritage including painters and wood workers. He has been drawing since early childhood and received awards at an early age. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a minor in psychology. After serving the psychology community in and around Chicago for three years, Steve pursued artistic training at The School of Representational Art. He received a certificate after four years of extensive training in academic drawing and painting, and the study of composition and impressionistic color. Steve draws inspiration from a wide variety of artists including the Old Masters, American and European Impressionists, and modern painters. His work includes realistic figurative works, portraits, still life and creative compositions. He has sold his works to private collectors and has displayed in public exhibitions held in Switzerland, Canada and U.S. Media exposure includes interview and articles on Study Drawing, Voyager LA, American Artist, Drawing, American Artist Magazine, Artbeat Chicago. He is an instructor at Pasadena City College’s Extension program, and works with students privately in his studio.
The Academy offers course preparation in: Animation, Product Design, Transportation Design, Entertainment Design/Game Design, Illustration, Graphic Design/Advertising, Fashion Design, Fine Art, Figure Drawing, UI/UX Design, Architecture/Urban/Environmental/Interior Design, etc.

Illustrations of Chinese Cultural Stories Children’s Drawing Contest award ceremony was held on December 28th, 2019 at the Double Tree Hotel in Whittier. 36 students from West California Academy of Art and Design (WCAAD) won multiple awards for all age groups, and WCAAD won the Overseas Chinese Cultural Heritage Contribution Award.

This contest is authorized by Professor Gongxin Zhou, the former president of the National Palace Museum of Taiwan, and organized by the Joy Luck Club. The contest objective is to share Chinese cultural heritage and renew cultural appreciation.
According to the contest organizer, Chinese culture will continue to be important in the future. Chinese people are proud of their culture and can work together to share the beautiful history with people around the world. Contestants are required to select any Chinese idiom and illustrate their unique interpretation of the idiom.
