Congratulations to WCAAD art instructor Omar Gallegos for winning the Educator Award of the 2024 Scholastic Art and Writing Award! Omar is the Vice Principal/Portfolio Prep Counselor of West California Academy of Art and Design. He has 20 years’ art teaching experiences, and his portfolio class have 100% admission rate for US top-tier art colleges including scholarships with over 5,000 students to date. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Alliance is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Awards give students opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Every year, students across the United States and Canada entered more than 200,000 original works, and 340,000 for the yea of 2024. WCAAD students Qier Wang, 14 years old, and Iris Jing, 17 years old, both won the National Silver Medal in the 2024 Scholastic Art and Writing Award. Qier’s winning artwork is titled “Their Eyes.” Qier Wang was awarded 1 Golden Key, 2 Silver Medal and 2 Honorable Mention in the 2023 Scholastic Art and Writing Award. She won “The Golden Key” Award for her artwork “Women” depicting empowerment and women of color and minorities. Other awards include two “Silver Key” awards for her work “A Beautiful Memory” and “What is Real” and two “Honorable Mention” Awards for her work “Expression” and “My Love.” Eric Lin, 17 years old, was awarded 2 Golden Key, 1 Silver Medal and 2 Honorable Mention in the 2022 Scholastic Art and Writing Award. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were founded in 1923 and, for nearly a century, have inspired bold ideas in creative teens throughout the country. Gold Key entries are automatically considered for national awards, including Gold Medal, Silver Medal with Distinction, Silver Medal, and scholarship awards. A list of all the National Medalists is published on their website each spring including up to 10,000 in scholarship prizes.
